Pencil and Paper are my friend. I keep a graph paper notebook by my bed for those times that I wake up and have an amazing idea. Sometimes I only have minutes to write it down or it is lost in the void between dreamland and consciousness.
Follow up:
No, last night was not one of those nights, but it makes for a great opening, no? Anyway: Onto the meat and potatoes of this post. Yesterday I talked about the mapping system, today I want to cover the world itself.
NRPG will feature a growing world. While the size of the world may not grow itself, stuff in the world is actually affected by time. Each day, stuff will change slightly in NRPG. Sections of plains may sprout saplings if trees are nearby. Saplings after so many days will grow into trees. Trees after so long will die off. Buildings, if left un-attended, will decay over time. Granted NPC owned buildings may not decay since by default NPC’s will maintain their buildings, but Player Owned buildings CAN decay.
This process doesn’t happen fast of course, but gradually the building will fall into a state of dis-repair.
As far as player buildings themselves: yes, players will have access to buildings. They can buy or rent buildings that have already been made, or they can build the buildings themselves. Why would a player want their own building? Well, if it is a cottage, they can have a chest in there that they can store extra inventory, or rest and heal up without charge. Cottages will also have a basic workshop for crafting, as well as a range and oven for cooking crafting.
Talking about things aging or decaying, probably leaves you wondering about Players and NPC’s themselves, right? Well, don’t worry. At this time I have no plans on making Players or NPC’s age. Buildings and plants are easier because I can just assign durability to them and treat them like items. Players and NPC’s though... that would be a little more difficult, and if players age, then that would stand to reason that they would die from age, which Players may not be too keen on.
